This is a feature found mainly on larger, commercial machines but which is also now appearing on smaller, general-purpose office machines. If excess material is fed into the machine which might cause cutter damage or just cause it to jam, a detector automatically throws the machine into reverse to clear the excess. This is a very useful feature on a machine used in an office where users are likely not to know how much material to feed into the shredder on each pass as in times past, this was responsible for many an engineer's call out to un-jam the machine.

As an extension of this, some newer designs are incorporating sensors to detect how much material is being fed in and these prevent the machine even starting up until the amount is reduced. This therefore avoids the necessity for auto-reverse, but machines that have such sensors still usually have it to make them effectively totally non-jammable.
