When paper is shredded, the size of the shreds can be made to vary in width and length. The smaller the size of the shreds, the more secure the shredder. Shred width can be reduced by placing the cutter blades closer together but shred length can only be reduced by using Cross Cut design cutter heads. Cross-cut (or confetti-cut) shredders use two contra-rotating cutter heads to cut rectangular, parallelogram, or diamond-shaped (lozenge) shreds. But these come at a price. Reducing either shred dimension makes the cutting heads work harder so Cross cut versions of the same model either work more slowly or shred fewer sheets per pass than their Strip Cut counterparts (see the term 'Strip Cut' in the Glossary). The more secure shredders are, the larger and more powerful their motors have to be. |
